HF-54Vineyard Management

Operating from a single vineyard model means there is no safety net in relation to vineyard management. We must take a leading edge approach to grape growing that results in exceptional wines reflective of the farm, while also ensuring it is a sustainable agricultural approach that recognises our custodial responsibility of the land.

We use a dry-land farming strategy, with an emphasis on keeping the vine canopy and earth in a natural state of balance with minimal interference. This involves only planting varieties that are well adapted to the Barossa's drier conditions, minimal and timely application of natural fertilisers and water, and water management and deep row cultivation to encourage deep root growth, which assists high grape quality in times of low rainfall.

We are very lucky to have Greg Mader as our vineyard manager. He mixes a respect and understanding of Mother Nature with scientific knowledge of both the land and grape growing. He takes a high quality approach to every aspect of what he does.

Greg started out as a chef, before taking a vineyard role with Penfolds in the 1990s. Over the next 12 years, he studied and gained formidable experience while working in various roles within that organisation. He eventually managed, with a team, over 700 hectares of Barossa Valley vineyards, including those producing grapes destined for the famous Grange label wines.  Recognising the opportunity to join Hentley Farm as one that will allow him to work with a small team on a truly special piece of land, where he can put his stamp across the entire wine growing process, Greg says:

"My approach to vineyard management is to produce exceptional wine grapes that reflect the land and capture the very essence of the special soils and microclimates that make up Hentley Farm. Notwithstanding, the undertaking of sound environmental practices supporting agricultural sustainability and biodiversity is paramount and therefore at the forefront of all vineyard activities. I nurture the vines to their optimum potential in regards to canopy management, pruning, irrigation and soil health. But as we all know 'Mother Nature' plays a significant role in any given vintage. Essentially, my part is to ensure our vines are well balanced and have the ability to produce the small intense-flavoured berries that allow us to make high end classic wines."
