Vineyard Management
Operating from a single vineyard model means there is no safety net in relation to vineyard management. We must take a leading edge approach to grape growing that results in exceptional wines reflective of the farm. Just as importantly, we need to ensure it is a sustainable agricultural approach that recognizes our custodial responsibility of the land.
We are very lucky to have Greg Mader as our vineyard manager. His methods, knowledge and passion for taking a high quality approach to every aspect of what he does fits in perfectly with the Hentley Farm team. He mixes a respect and understanding of Mother Nature with scientific knowledge of both the land and grape growing.
Greg's passion and appreciation for wine was developed during his time as a Chef. He quickly took advantage of the opportunity to join Penfolds in the 1990s in a vineyard role. Over the next 12 years, Greg blended formal study with experiential learning as he progressed through the organisation in a variety of roles to eventually manage with a team over 700 hectares of vineyards in the Barossa Valley. Along the way, he had wonderful opportunities to work alongside many talented viticulturalists and winemakers and gained valuable experience in producing grapes for many famous wines including, of course, Penfold's flagship Grange label.
Greg saw the opportunity to join Hentley Farm as one that will allow him to work with a small team on a truly special piece of land. He also recognised Hentley Farm as a place he can put his stamp across the entire wine growing process. In the man's own words...
"My approach to vineyard management is to produce exceptional wine grapes that reflect the land and capture the very essence of our special soils and microclimates that make up Hentley Farm. Notwithstanding, the undertaking of sound environmental practices supporting agricultural sustainability and biodiversity is paramount and therefore at the forefront of all vineyard activities. As Vineyard Manager, I nurture the vines in regard to their optimum potential in regards to canopy management, pruning, irrigation and soil health. But as we all know 'Mother Nature' plays a significant role in any given vintage. Essentially, my part is to ensure our vines are well balanced and have the ability to produce the small intense-flavoured berries that allow us to make high end classic wines from the western ridge of the Barossa Valley here at Seppeltsfield."
