The Creation Project

The Project

Each year, our Chief Winemaker Andrew Quin creates a limited release single block wine that showcases the unique terroir diversity across the Hentley Farm estate, and the characteristics of the vintage that was.

Originally under the familiar Hentley Farm white label, The Creation now has an original label created each vintage by artists from the Adelaide Central School of Art, to portray the individuality, style, and distinction of this iconic wine.

The 2019 Vineyard, H Block

The original Hentley Farm Seppeltsfield single estate vineyard, has a unique diversity of soil, aspect and altitude, producing exceptional wines that show the distinct hallmarks of vibrancy, velvety silk tannins, and intense flavour richness.

The estate was extended in 2004 with the purchase of a neighbouring vineyard which shared the treasured amphitheatre that surround Hentley Farm. In 2012 an old clone of Cabernet was planted amongst the original vines in the lowest section of the vineyard – H block, on deep red clay loam, east – west orientated rows with a slight easterly aspect.

The Wine, The Creation 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon

Each vintage there are different reasons why wines for The Creation “pop out” during classification, and this wine stood out as being a complete wine with great structure and fruit intensity.

More telling the story of the vintage than the block, with less herbaceousness than existing plantings of H block and the best example of the 2019 vintage trademark of cabernets that are structured full bodied reds, embodying all that the Barossa is known for. This parcel was the best example of this vintage character, and a proud new chapter in the Creation story.

The 2019 Artist, James Dodd

James Dodd has exhibited widely across Australia in artist run, publicly funded and commercial spaces. His work traverses (and collapses) the boundaries between visual street culture, alternative uses of urban space, and existing gallery conventions.

“This project extends my ongoing investigations into machines as tools within a visual arts practice. The colours respond to the numerous rich reds of Barossa earth which span the Hentley Farm estate, and the mark-making is a nod to creative pursuits, such as graffiti, which have played a large influence on my practice.

This project highlights that both wine making and art making processes require diligence, accrued knowledge, and a little bit of magic to achieve great results.” James Dodd
